The Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower is a research facility for ocean observation, which is located 1 km off Hiratsuka, Sagami Bay and 20 m deep, and is one of the few valuable offshore platforms in Japan. Built in 1965, it has contributed to ocean data collection for over 40 years, mainly in the field of wave observations.
The Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower was transferred to the University of Tokyo on July 1, 2009 as a facility to develop new ocean research. The UTokyo Ocean Alliance Collaborative Research Organization has established the Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower Program to manage and operate the Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower, effectively utilize it as an ocean experiment platform, and use it as a research and education facility for equipment development and ocean observation.
The Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower Program will continue to transmit ocean information such as waves, and will be useful for coastal disaster prevention in Sagami Bay and for fishing and leisure. In addition, in order to promote marine-related research and development of marine equipment in Japan, we are recruiting for use of Hiratsuka Offshore Experimental Tower inside and outside the university.
